Seedling Nursery Production Grower-01010455
Two Grower positions are available, with one reporting to the Nursery Manager at Weyerhaeuser NR Company’s Western Regeneration business at the Aurora Nursery (located south of Portland, Oregon), and the other Grower position reporting to the Mima Nursery (located south of Olympia, Washington). These full-time positions are part of a team that produces bare-root seedlings to internal and external reforestation customers.

These individuals will be part of a facility team with a strong safety, teamwork and customer service focus. The successful candidates will be a member of the seedling growing team and have responsibility to implement technology and reliable processes to improve quality, consistency and cost. Pay is commensurate with level of training and experience.
•Provide daily leadership and supervision of company and contract crew while performing nursery activities associated with seedling production including sowing, transplanting, irrigation, growing, inventory, frost protection, and harvest.
•Role model safe work practices.
•Lead safety and other team meetings.
•Train and inspect performance to ensure that proper job and safety rules are followed.
•Ensure appropriate incident investigation and follow-up are completed.
•Follow and document reliable processes for safety, quality, production, and costs.
•Ensure compliance with safety and environmental rules and regulations.
•Understand seed and seedling quality specs and leverage key points for seedling yield, cost and performance.
•Effectively prioritize, plan, implement and manage activities to meet targets and deadlines.
•Balance labor resources to ensure continuous improvement in safety, quality, production and costs.
•Manage procedures for collecting, documenting, communicating, and recordkeeping of safety, quality, production and cost data.
•Perform ‘crop walks’ to observe crop health and yield issues.
•Effectively communicate and coordinate responsibilities with peers and team members.
•Share administrative responsibilities including employee, payroll, purchasing, and training records.
•College graduate with background in Forestry, Agronomy, Horticulture, Agriculture or related fields with a working knowledge of seedling biology or physiology.
•Genuine interest in personal and career development and desire to function as a grower with responsibility for prescribing and documenting seedling growing and protection practices and results.
•Must possess leadership skills that include a proven ability to coach employees to a higher level of performance.
•Able to plan and manage time effectively with minimal supervision.
•Good planning, organizational skills, and problem-solving capabilities.
•Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
•Demonstrate good observation and problem solving skills.
•Strong value systems and ethics demonstrated in fair treatment of all people.
•Work well as a team member with shared responsibilities.
•Proficient computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook.
•Ability to obtain a pesticide applicator’s license and supervisor related activities.
•Flexible availability regarding days and hours of work during seasonal activities.
•Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position including working both indoors and outdoors with exposure to a variety of weather conditions and on uneven working surfaces.
•Possess driver’s license.
•Successfully complete pre-employment testing process.
•5 years seedling growing and production experience preferred.
•Understand the types and safe legal uses of chemicals for seedling growing and protection.
•Familiar with the operation of nursery equipment.
•Ability to communicate in Spanish is desirable.
